Motivational Interviewing is client-centered approach to communication. Goals are to help the client: a) identify behaviors that the client wishes to change personally and/or in the dog;  b) work through ambivalence about change; c) increase adherence to a behavioral plan that the client and trainer commit to as a team.

Motivational interviewing is nonconfrontational yet directive. The process may last more than one session. The links below provide a guide to the process.

The Cycle of Change. Continually assess where the client is at in the cycle.
